Why here, and not another stretch of it
Ships coming back from India, Brazil and the coast of Africa raised this headland first, then worked up the river to Lisbon. Cascais is the ground a returning crew saw before they saw anything else of home, after two years of salt and bad water, and the last thing off the stern on the way out.
That is the half of the story these titles are for. Not the going. The coming back. A plot on the ocean they crossed would mean nothing; this is the ground they were trying to get back to.
Where the land ends
Cabo da Roca stands about ten kilometers north up the same coast, and it is the westernmost point of mainland Europe. For a long time it was taken for the western edge of the world. The monument on the cliff there carries a line of Camões, written about this coast, which in Os Lusíadas runs:
